5-4-05 Wednesday
Today we visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park. When we arrived around 10 am it was a gray and rainy morning. We descended the hour-long natural entrance trail to the Big Room cavern. Everywhere we looked we saw stalacmites and stalactites of every shape and size in immense caverns too large to describe. The caverns were not crowded and often we felt we were the only ones walking the trail. In the afternoon we joined a ranger-guided tour of the King's Palace cavern with elaborate drip formations, pools, and intense total darkness. When we ascended at 4 pm the sun was shining and most of the clouds were gone. Onward to Roswell, home of the the 1947 Roswell UFO "incident". Coming into town we noticed the airplane graveyard at the Roswell airport. There were at least 100 retired aircaft from TWA and other airlines lined up on the tarmac. Dinner at another Furr's cafeteria and back to the room to rest.
