After a full breakfast buffet at the hotel we hit a few sites in the Rapid City area. First we visited a couple sections of the Berlin wall in a downtown park, and then we found the Cleghorn Spring Fish Hatchery where we saw thousands of river and lake trout. We watched as workers took weight samples before removing the 6-8" trout to stock a regional lake. Next we located the Stavkirke, a replica of an 850 year-old Norwegian church, in a peaceful park setting.
In Lead, SD we stopped briefly to view the Homestead mining pit where famous Black Hills gold has been mined for over 100 years. And near Beulah, WY (pop. 33) we stopped at the Vore Buffalo Jump, an active and productive archaeological dig.
As we traveled back toward Billings we saw the remaining autumn color and the mountains and terrain we missed due to rain and snow a week earlier. When we first drove by we had no idea the now snow-capped mountains were even there!
The weather today was beautiful with highs in the 50's and mostly blue skies. Today's drive was a long one and we finished listening to Barbara Bush's "Reflections" book - she's a very interesting writer. When we arrived in Billings we had dinner at Famous Dave's BBQ and really enjoyed it.
Today was a great way to end our trip. Tomorrow we fly home to resume our hum-drum lives again. :(
