Okay, we get the idea - when it snows it gets c-o-l-d! And we had 5-6" of the stuff during the night. Fortunately the snow plows had done their job and the major roads were clear.
We arrived at Devil's tower along with the other 5 or 6 hapless tourists who also don't know how to interpret weather forecasts. We made the 1.3 mile trek around the base through tremendous drifts, some as high as 12"! Hiking boots are a pain at airport security but sure come in handy for this type of activity. The views were spectacular, nearly black and white, but with a fresh and clean appearance.
The drive through the Spearfish Canyon to Deadwood wasn't as pretty as it probably was just two days ago. Most of the aspens were bowed beneath the weight of the snow, but it was still scenic enough that we may repeat it later in the trip. We're in Deadwood, SD (home of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane) tonight and will start exploring the surrounding area tomorrow.
