We eased into morning again but were on the road to Nebraska by 10. We went through Hot Springs, SD and into Nebraska. Along the way we traveled through the National Grasslands and saw mile after mile of rolling prairie land covered with golden wild grass. The weather today was mostly clear, breezy, and reached about 80°by mid-afternoon - very nice!
Our destination was Alliance, NE, home of Carhenge (www.carhenge.com). As connoisseurs of great car art we can truly say visiting this monument was a once in a lifetime experience (once was probably enough).
We took a different route back to Custer, stopped by Fort Robinson, NE where Crazy Horse met his demise, and enjoyed a great Mexican dinner and a short river walk in Hot Springs. We took in "Just Like Heaven" at the local theater and then drove back to Custer for our last night there. Driving to Custer after dark was a little unnerving since we saw at least 20 deer grazing just a few feet from the road, and one walked right in front of the car doing a great George W. Bush impression.
Sunday we plan to go to church in the morning, visit Wind Cave in the afternoon, and then head east to the Badlands and Rapid City.
